About the Author

After reading this iconic work, I felt as if I had been ripped off with only myself to blame. I should have known better. The book is SOOOOOOO 70's! I'll give it two stars simply because it's really so out-of-date it's almost campy.Okay, early oil paintings depicted the upper classes with their "stuff" and the "stuff" of the upper classes. So? It's pretty elemental to figure out that those painters had to make a living and they painted for those who were able to pay them. Duh. Okay, women were depicted in oil paintings as possessions and, in turn, viewed themselves in the light of the value the possessor placed on them. Deep and enlightening, huh?It gets worse. We get a healthy dose of the "capitalism is bad" philosophy and the hammering that advertising is meant to keep the masses enslaved to capitalism. Nineteen seventies style collectivism is so boring. Of course, Berger offers no alternative other than some passing reference to his vague definition of democracy.Maybe it's just so out-dated, it's no longer relevant. Maybe it played better to the 1970's. Maybe we've heard this claptrap for so many years, it's no longer novel or meaningful. And, maybe, it's because we've matured enough to realize criticism without any offering of alternatives is simply disingenuous and superficial.
Great Book, but the copy i was sent was all in black and white. The first printing paperback had mostly color images. Its MUCH better with color images...
The book is incredible, hence my five star rating. I’d like to warn you that this print of the book however, is terrible. Lets start with this lazy cover, which is literally just the first page printed on front, text and all. I know that’s a superficial complaint but to me these things matter. The more important issue is the spine of the book. The pages start ripping out when you hold it open and after staying in my car for a couple of hours, the glue started to loosen and the pages fell out! I’ve never had this issue with another book. Another bad note is that it’s in black and white, making it difficult to see the art that it uses as examples in this book.Overall i highly highly reccomend this book but please buy another print.
I enjoyed it only cause I found it more clear then the documentary. The ideas here are interesting and has stuck with me over the years. I recommend this to artist in any field. just cause it really changes your perspective on things after reading it. I kinda found the chapters to be a bit long and I wish there was more images. But it was a great read.
Excellent. The chapter on "publicity" (advertising) is particularly good. Wonderful critique of the way capitalism debases art, culture, and the human person.
Overall the book is OK. It could use a rewrite to bring it into the 21st century, it is now 46 years sine publication. Many of the photos and concepts could be refreshed. We look at things differently in 2019 vs 1972, and I can remember 1972. It may be that the TV series was better, I’m going to see if it is on YouTube.
It was much smaller than I expected. It was in black n white and small old type set. Perhaps I misread mis-saw it when I ordered it.
A fascinating book that connects the history of oil painting to modern day advertising. Not really sure if this should go on my art / design or philosophy bookshelf.
I had been on the lookout for a good book on visual culture, and after a long search , I decided to buy this one, as it is a classic. A classic in the non-fiction genre means that latest books on the subject have stolen the main themes from the classic text-which may be very short-and then added verbosity and lots of pictures to make thick and expensive books.This book may seem like a small book full of pictures, but it propounds big ideas. For me it was a quick read, I finished it in a few hours, possibly more so due to the fact that the main ideas were thoughts already scattered in my head; Berger compiled them, stated them way more eloquently, and then some.As is often the case, this book took me back to Qur'anic verses, as it seemed to be tied to the main themes of the Islamic scripture. The section on the female nude, could very well have been a summary of a dissertation on the veil in Islam. A detailed discussion is beyond the scope of this review.Having just read Chomsky's "How the world works," it was quite intriguing to read Berger making the same connections of capitalism with envy, covetousness and social apathy. Just like Chomsky, his identification of capitalism as a roadblock to democracy was also equally intriguing. It was almost the same points being stated, except that this time the thesis was based on marketing and the visual arts. (less)
